It was a blast. The floppy flyer, the motorized scooter, the park swings, the camel back-packs filled with something other than water, volleyball long after dusk, the comparisons between Rachel’s dad and my boyfriend Matt (they are practically the same person separated by about 25 years), poker, Japanese restaurant (I had sushi for the first time. Shrimp and avocado that’s of course wrapped in seaweed and rice.), the bonfire, the roman candles (aka fireworks), oh, and the fruit salad at the party was to die for. It was good to see two of my favorite Messiah graduates again and meet some of Rach’s high school friends. They’re a riot. On the drive back, I listened to some Toby Keith cds that she burned for me and by the fourth track, I had come to the conclusion that country music isn't half bad (in moderation).

Friday, April 28, 2006

Guess who is officially going to Philly next semester? yeah, it's me!

Wednesday, April 26, 2006

"Your job as an artist is to build a box, and then let people watch you escape from it," Springsteen explained. "And then they follow you to the next box, and they watch you escape from that one... Escape artistry is part of the survival mechanism of the job."

I decided today that I should compile quotes that speak to me into a notebook. This quote from Bruce Springsteen is going to be on the first page.

Friday, April 21, 2006

the girls (kinda caught off-guard)

My roommates and I are pretty pumped. The excitement to get out there and dance is brewing.

Easter break was so good. Angie and I, in the absence of Melisa, hung out with her parents, listening as they told us countless embarrassing childhood stories about their daughter. Based on the quality of these stories, I plan to sketch a charcter named Ingrid for my upcoming novel. Doesn't Melisa look like an Ingrid?

Summer plans, as far as work goes, are shaping up quite nicely. Matt's mom offered me a job that I will most likely work in addition to my full-time summer job. More hours = more money but also = less time to hang. However student loans are gonna bite me in the butt if I don't start saving to pay them off after graduation, and graduation, let me remind you is only one year, two semesters, and 28 credits away.

For this newswriting class, my group is doing a two-minute report on Spring break mission trips. It's hard to take such a thing as broadcast news seriously when we have the freedom to write the script for the anchors and have free reign on a video camera. Guess who is reporting live on the story? moi. this should be funny. I keep thinking about Steve Carell in Bruce Almighty during that hilarious scene in the anchor room:

Evan Baxter: The White House reception committee greeted the Prime Ribroast Minister and... I do the cha-cha like a sissy girl. I lik-a do da cha-cha. I'm sorry we seem to be having some technical difficulties. In other news
[breaks wind]
Evan Baxter: Ohhhh. My apologies. Bulla blah, bulla blabity bulla bla
[rapid unitelligible gibberish]
Evan Baxter: Blabity blab bulla blah
[explosive gibberish]
Evan Baxter: [continues for 35 seconds]
[vaguely Chinese]
Evan Baxter: Kaa kaa poo poo. Donald Miller is a funny guy. I've been quoting him every since I heard him speak this week.

"I don't mean to be condescending, which means to talk down to you"

"whose gun is smoking now?"

and my personal favorite, "Hobbit my ass"

Here's one of the articles he talked about - Tolkein was no Hobbit!

My poem is totally fictional and hopefully funny. Let me know what you think.

The Dragon Slayer

(a dedication to Mr. Matthew Roth)

On his weekend leisure, my teacher draws

a sword, waves it wildly, swats at the enemy

dragons of his childhood. He mostly misses

hits the water instead with slashes and

quick-stop stabs at the pond’s gravel bottom.

The pond in his backyard isn’t fit for swimming

but my teacher, the big buffoon wears a Speedo

for maximum speed off the overhang, he jumps from

rock to rock to escape green and blue monsters

and landing with a splash, startled, the dragon flies.

Boy, that teacher of mine no longer wears a Speedo

for that afternoon, he donated his dignity to the pond

unwilling, he ran from those tiny winged creatures

with only a plastic picnic knife for protection against

the wide-eyed stares and dropped-jaws of neighbors.
